The YMCA holds a special place in the heart of Diane Parham, chief lending officer for Members Choice Credit Union. Her strong desire to serve is rooted in her own personal experience with the Y, where she recently become more involved in a leadership capacity, taking an active role on the Healthy Living and Turkey Dash committees.
“Most people think of the Y as just a ‘swim & gym’, but it is so much more than that,” Diane says. “The Y focuses on youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility with a variety of different initiatives and programs.”
One of those is the Y’s Safety Around Water program, which teaches children and adults lifesaving skills for drowning prevention. This program is especially meaningful to Diane because she lost a nephew to drowning.
“So many young lives have been lost to preventable drowning accidents,” she says. “I truly believe the Y is saving lives with their program. It’s amazing to witness.”
In addition to the Safety Around Water program, these are just a few of the other YMCA programs available to all individuals regardless of ability to pay.
- Increasing social equity through resettlement programs for refugees and immigrants
- The Y TEEN L.I.F.E. program (Leadership, Inspiration, Fellowship, Education), which gives youth exposure to college readiness, social, and recreational activities, mentoring and service learning
- The Youth Government program, which teaches the next generation the basics of democracy
- A’STEAM, an afterschool program focused on the arts, social engineering and math
- Diabetes and childhood obesity prevention
“I have seen Y employees and volunteers embrace and aid individuals from all socio-economic backgrounds and ages with genuine care and concern,” she says, “I’m grateful that Members Choice provides me a platform to support an organization that has done so much for myself, my family, and the community.”
“We are extremely proud of Diane for her involvement in the YMCA,” says Randy Theilig, president and CEO of Members Choice Credit Union. “As a community-oriented organization, we encourage employees at all levels to actively participate and give back to local area non-profits. It’s a big part of who we are.”
There are three YMCA of Greater Houston locations near our branches, offering programs for all ages: the Monty Ballard YMCA at Cinco Ranch, the Mark A. Chapman YMCA at Katy Main Street, and the Langham Creek Family YMCA.
Teaching children how to be safe around water is not a luxury; it is a necessity. The YMCA’s Safety Around Water program can help you make sure they learn essential water safety skills, which can open up a world of possibilities for them to satisfy their curiosity safely.
