140 MCCU employees + Feed the Hunger + energy & enthusiasm = 14,440 meals

There’s something special about an organization that looks beyond its walls and asks what more it can do for others. Talk to any employee, and they’ll share that Members Choice Credit Union is like no other company they’ve worked for—the values and mission are truly lived every day.

Throughout the year, this has rung true. However, a few months ago, on October 14, 2019, this approach to giving was personified by the entire company in one day. On that day, Members Choice employees gathered for a day of service and camaraderie with our first “Pack, Picnic & Play” employee event.

The day started when our employees gathered early on three large buses for the trip to The Hangar, Eyes on Me, Inc.’s community facility in Brookshire. After the short road trip, we quickly assembled to start the first “Pack” portion of the day. Regina Alexander of Feed the Hunger worked with our community team to organize a large pack-a-thon to assemble nourishing meals for distribution from Haiti to Eastern Kentucky, and even Katy. Working together, four teams were able to pack a total of 14,400 meals!

“Feed the Hunger would like to personally thank Members Choice Credit Union for coming alongside our organization to pack 14,440 meals.

I had the awesome opportunity to witness the enthusiasm from each individual throughout the pack-a-thon. Because of Members Choice, Feed the Hunger will distribute meals to local organizations such as Katy Christian Ministries, Loaves & Fishes, as well as assist in feeding 58 children in Lynch, Kentucky & Haiti for an entire year. Your service will make a tremendous difference in the lives of others, and Members Choice has modeled what it is to love your neighbor as yourself, with your acts of service."

-Regina Alexander, Pack-a-thon Coordinator

Joye Jackson, community lead and chief strategy officer, shared that while employees have been volunteering for community partners at multiple events each month, it was important to do something we could all share in. “Our employee volunteerism has shown that giving back is important to all of us, so we wanted to create a chance for everyone to share in a volunteer event together. Our “Pack, Picnic & Play” event on Columbus Day provided the perfect opportunity for us to do something as an entire organization, and we accomplished that goal in a big way. Each year, we’ll continue to look for ways to mobilize our purpose and demonstrate our values with within the community.”

"The Feed the Hunger event really has a double meaning.  Not only is it food to nourish the bodies of children in need, it is food-for-thought needed for awareness.  Many of us have lived our entire lives without having to think about food as a need. I once heard that if you can choose what you will eat even one time a day, you are among the wealthiest to walk the earth."

-Tracey Sweetland, MCCU Employee

MCCU Feed The Hunger Volunteers 2019

The day also marked another important milestone. That day, MCCU employees exceeded our 2019 goal of 2000 community volunteer hours! We celebrated as the new bar was set that day at 2147.5 hours, and there’s still more to come before year end. "In fact," said Joye, "as of December we have far surpassed what we expected to accomplish this year. We want to thank each and every MCCU employee who has personally carried this spirit of volunteerism into the entire organization. As we close this year, we are excited to announce that we have had 100% volunteer participation from staff, which will equate to over 2500 hours.”

All of us at Members Choice are grateful for the opportunity to partner with local non-profits to  serve our community. We know our members see our professionalism and friendly service every day, and it fills our hearts to also make such a positive difference in our community above-and-beyond the service we provide to our members. Because supporting our community is very important to us, MCCU CARES will continue to be an integral part of our activities in 2020, and beyond.
